Self Catering Holidays In Lanzarote

There are plenty of stunning Spanish holiday islands – but none can match the surreal and eerie scenery of Lanzarote.  As much of the islands interior was transformed by violent eruptions in the 18th century which left around 200km square carpeted in thick lava.

Today the volcanoes that caused this mayhem are all dormant and the volcanic region, known as the Fire Mountains, is the most visited destination on the island.  Whilst also serving as a location for various film makers in search of a dramatic backdrop.  Such as the producers of Clash of the Titans 3, Warners latest 3D blockbuster.  Which was partly shot on location here.

Over the years Lanzarote has become especially popular with British tourists – who account for around 50% of all visitors.  Drawn by the islands incredible non stop sunshine and familiar Spanish customs.  As although Lanzarote is owned by Spain it is in fact located off the coast of Africa, enjoying high temperatures and sunshine all year round as a result.

Holidays in Lanzarote
started to take off in the 1970s – when the island was viewed as quite an exotic and novel new destination.  And since then visitor numbers peaked in the 1990´s at around 1.8 million tourists a year.  That has tailed off during the last decade as competition from newer holiday hot spots has increased – with Egypt, Turkey and Dubai all vying for the islands winter sun market.

There are many different places to stay on the island – ranging from small studios through to chic rural hotels.  Many British visitors prefer to book Lanzarote holiday villas direct online with the owners.  And this self catering sector is now estimated to account for around half of all tourist stays.  Whilst apartments are popular as they offer excellent value for money.

Puerto del Carmen is the largest resort – as well as the oldest.  Situated just a short drive from the airport at Arrecife and boasting some excellent beaches and lively nightlife.  This is the place to head for if you like to combine long days at the beach with long nights on the tiles.  And there are plenty of hotels and villas in Puerto del Carmen available for visitors.

The cost of accommodation on Lanzarote is also much more competitive than on many other Spanish holiday islands.  Reflecting the fact that Lanzarote enjoys a twelve month rather than three month season.  Car hire and restaurants are also noticeably cheaper than say in Ibiza or Mallorca.
