Apartment Breaks in Lanzarote

The introduction of cheap flights to Lanzarote over recent months has opened up the island to visitors who like to tailor their own holiday experience. As the warmest corner of Europe, the Canarian archipelago has long been popular with holidaymakers both in Summer and Winter.

But due to the four hour flight time, until earlier this year it was difficult to find low cost airline tickets to visit the island. Whereas now, it is the ideal destination for the more independent traveller, who prefers to stay in an apartment in Lanzarote so they have the freedom to take each day as it comes.

The three main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca have a wide range of good quality apartments and accommodation in Lanzarote is reasonably priced compared to some of the other Spanish islands. Combined with the low environmental impact tourism has made on Lanzarote, it continues to surprise and delight new visitors. Especially when they hire a car and go out and explore the rest of the island.

Much of this restrained development is down to one man, the artist and architect César Manrique, whose influence can still be felt even today. His is the creative genius behind the seven main tourist attractions on Lanzarote, where he has been able to combine the natural beauty with manmade functions, such as restaurants, bars and museums.

His most impressive project was undoubtedly the creation of the Jameos del Agua – an underground lava tunnel that is now home to a lake, a lagoon, a music auditorium and some amazing hanging gardens. Whilst in the southern half of the island, he oversaw the transformation of the volcanic eruptions into Lanzarote’s most popular tourist attraction, the Timanfaya National Park.

For the more active visitor, there is also an incredible range of activities to get involved in. With land based sports from golf to horse-riding and trekking and sea based excursions such as sailing, kayaking and fishing. The year round Spring like climate makes it the ideal atmosphere for sporting endeavours, which is one of the reasons why athletes train in Winter on Lanzarote.

And for holidaymakers who simply need to relax, the sun-drenched beaches offer the perfect backdrop for switching off. With a range of atmospheric restaurants and bars overlooking the sea, the difficulty most visitors experience is deciding how to spend the day during their holidays in Lanzarote.
